Flood Warning And Watches Through Saturday: Update Radar Simulation

Flood Warning And Watches Through Saturday: Update Radar Simulation

Friday May 18 2018

This is one busy map and if you have plans this evening or Saturday, plan on getting wet. I just want to simply things: The dark green means our entire region is under a Flood Watch through Saturday. Rainfall may dump an additional 1 to 3 inches and add the high water we have already seen. There is not much more the ground and absorb, so in heavier bands flooding is possible.  The lighter green shading is for Flood Warnings on local streams, rivers with water overflowing. This also includes coastal ares on the Chesapeake Bay in Anne Arundel and Calvert Counties where higher water is also being pushed onshore form easterly winds.

Rain has advanced and is spreading north this afternoon. It will reach into southern Pennsylvania. The majority of rain will fall overnight and into Saturday morning. While the rain will break, showers and some thunderstorms may redevelop into the afternoon. This includes Preakness. Here is a look at the radar and simulations.

What You Can See Here

The radar loop below shows two things of importance: I have annotated this snapshot to show you

  1. The Easterly Wind From the Bay. This is feeding in moisture to enhance the rain. But, also the wind flow off the Bay pushing water on the western shore.
  2. The main rain advancing to the north. See this in motion below.
