March 22 2017 – The headline does seem to conflict, but we really are undergoing a big cool down this morning as the news comes out about the heat policy in Baltimore County Public Schools. Last night Baltimore County Public School Board eliminated their policy to close schools without air condition when temps reach 90ºF by 11 AM. It was a controversial decision in the first place for the aging buildings that retain heat and make everyone inside uncomfortable. It also makes after school sports and activities a challenge. Superintendent Dallas Dance asked to be able to make the decision himself instead of being forced by the forecast.
Governor Hogan stepped in last year to increase the demand to put air conditioning in all of the schools to be on par with the rest of the state. I visited many schools this winter that was in the process of the renovations. By this fall, all school except 13 school should have been upgraded.
Today’s weather will be quite a different story. After reaching the daily high of 55ºF at midnight, the temps have been dropping with the arrival of a new arctic air mass. Much of today will be in the 30s with wind chills in the 20s and lower 30s thanks to strong winds.
