Coastal Storm Will Bring Burst Of Wet Snow

Coastal Storm Will Bring Burst Of Wet Snow

Monday January 23 – The strong Nor’Easter off of the Mid Atlantic coast may bring up memories of our record snowstorm a year ago, but this time the cold air is in short supply. However there is some cold air both feeding into the storm and being generated by the intense Low Pressure. This is the same system that was responsible to multiple deaths in the tornado outbreak over the past two days in the deep south. Below is the 24 hour water vapor satellite loop showing the rapid circulation of this storm. It its impressive!  Watch a few loops and see the Low reform along the coast. This is where the true gradient can have explosive development which will take place tonight. We are on the back edge of this, just getting clipped by the cold air and moisture as it moves towards New England.

Coastal Low

As this rapidly develops and moves up the coast, it will pull the cold air and some snow on the back side. This will swing through the northern half of our area overnight.

Notes:

The typical west and north areas inland from Baltimore have the best chance for some snow between midnight and 6 AM.

Staying Above Freezing

Surface temperatures are expected to stay in the mid 30s. Even while cold air will be dragged down with the snow or sleet, the surface air will remain above freezing. If you were in the sleet areas today, you may have seen the ground get covered as the precipitation overcompensated for the warmth. But once it stopped it had a chance to melt. I see the same in the snowy areas… But you may wake up to a coating on the cars and grass. Perhaps some slushy streets, but I don’t hold you breath for school delays. That will be a long shot.
