Saturday December 17 – Sleet and freezing rain moved on this morning on schedule. This will be a dangerous morning. The radar may have showed snow, but that didn’t last long due to fast moving winds just 4,000 feet above the ground pushing in warmer air at cloud level. The arctic air and frozen ground are allowing anything falling to freeze on contact. at 5 AM Baltimore’s BWI reported 28°F with a dew point of 22°F. The cold will hold for a few hours at least! Temperatures will be slow to rise, and even after reaching 32F, the ground will be slow to thaw. So icing will last longer than computer models forecasting the warming, but the afternoon will reach the 40s. This is a bad morning for the Celtic Solstice 5 Mile race at Druid Hill Park. The Ugly Sweater Run in Baltimore will be ugly.
Winter Weather Advisory for icing until 11 AM for most areas, but 1 PM northwest of Baltimore. Freezing Rain Advisory in southern Maryland this morning. Ice accumulation can be .25″ to .40″
Here’s what it looked and sounded like at my place: Instant Ice
