Cold Weekend Leads To Light Snow Or Mix Then Rain

Cold Weekend Leads To Light Snow Or Mix Then Rain

Saturday December 10 – The core of the cold air settles in today as temperature will remain in the 30s. The winds will not be as strong, and more clouds dominate the morning sky.  But we will remain dry today for the Army Navy game.  The news headlines of heavy Lake Effect Snow are a reflection of this arctic air, but not what we expect to reach us. Another storm will influence our weather, and the track will bring in warmer air before an even colder shot of arctic air next week.

The main story I’ve ben tracking for a few days has been the storm track. It will be to our north, allowing the warmer air on Monday. But the question of what arrives ahead of it will determine if you get to see light snow fall on Sunday. At this point, there is a chance of flurries or a light wintry mix in central Maryland. North and west of Baltimore into southern Pennsylvania will be more likely to have light snow on Sunday. Temperatures will be slow to warm up… and the NAM/WRF Model here shows its own confusion with precipitation type and the freezing line.  After starting tomorrow in the 20s, the slow warming will be important to monitor.

What to expect???

Look for flurries or some sleet in central Maryland, but not a big deal. Closer to the Pennsylvania line will have a better chance to get steady light snow. The ground will be cold enough for some stickage. The European and Canadian models hint at a dusting possible Sunday evening and night. The GFS Model continues to be less dramatic, keeping most of the action north in PA, then just rain Monday morning.  Arctic air can be slower to budge than models show, especially this time of year. So the colder suburbs should look out for possible icing overnight into early Monday morning. *I told my road maintenance clients there is a 50% chance they may have to drop salt.

Compare the two possible ways this could play out.

Colder Next Week: More Snow Chances

Tis the season, and after we see how this plays out, we can start to trust one outcome over another for the next system. But we can have more to watch in the middle of next week as arctic air pushes farther south again.
