Tropical Storm Hermine: Warning, Rain, Waves, Wind

Screen Shot2016-09-03 07_42_42Saturday September 3 – Tropical Storm Hermine is emerging back over the water and strengthening. The center was seen on visible satellite crossing the Outer Banks outwards the ocean at 21 mph.  Yes, the stories you may have heard are true. This may become a hurricane again and will either stall or curve back closer to the coast by Labor Day.  The winds are 60 mph and the water off the Mid Atlantic coast are warm enough to support growth. Tropical Storm Warnings include Ocean City, Delaware, and New Jersey with the open ended ‘Until Further Notice’ from the National Hurricane Center.

Screen Shot2016-09-03 07_10_53The winds will be gusty along the beaches today and perhaps again Sunday night and Monday. Waves offshore will be over 20 feet high and winds over 40 mph along the coast, plus dangerous rip currents and extensive beach erosion.  Here are the maps, which start with rainfall today, then a look at the entire storm.

Simulated Radar: HRRR Model –> slider

The heaviest rain will be offshore, but the edge will clip coastal areas. A sharp drop off near the Chesapeake Bay. Notice that some of the western fringe might not see the showers that show up on radar due to virga.
