Snow Showers And Flurries While Above Freezing

Snow Showers And Flurries While Above Freezing

radar1225The last part of this storm is a taste of winter. After the severe storms and record rainfall yesterday, the colder part of this storm is filling back in. So if you still have Faith in the Flakes, you’ll take them even if they won’t do much. That is the case today.  I was driving through Hanover PA and Taneytown, MD with snow falling. Meanwhile the temperature was 42°F. Yes, it can snow with air temperature (at the surface) 10 degrees or more above freezing. No stickage, but thanks to much colder clouds, the flakes are surviving the trip down to the ground.

This is something that can confuse computer models, and even the winter mode on regional radar. But essentially this is a product of how strong the showers are. Heavier precipitation can drag down colder air and likely to mix rain over to snow.  So take this radar simulation with a grain of salt. There will be showers mixed with snow, or just flurries at times, especially in the colder north/west suburbs. The main push of energy will reach metro Baltimore between 4 PM and 6 PM with the best chance for some of those flakes to reach the city and the Bay briefly.
