Freeze And Thaw Cycle, Costal Storm, Flooding Next Week

Freeze And Thaw Cycle, Costal Storm, Flooding Next Week

Temperatures7AMJanuary 28,  7 AM-Temperatures this morning are back in the deep freeze. The classic thaw during the day and freeze again at night is a classic post storm cycle. So once below 32°F, it might not matter much. Except if drop salt and need to know if the more expensive calcium chloride is needed since it works at colder temperatures than standard rock salt (sodium chloride). Other chemicals such as magnesium, or bromide solutions are used to try and act in lower temperatures. Regardless, its cold and there is ice where snow piles melted. As the sun rises, check out the spread:

  • Baltimore 18°F
  • Westminster 18°F
  • York, PA 0°F

——–Near The Water——

  • Washington 26°F
  • Annapolis 27°F
  • Easton 25°F

We will miss a big storm off of the coast Friday, but some flurries and strong winds are possible. Then the thaw takes over. The pattern supports the storm next week to pass to our west. That is a warm track, which means temperatures could surge along with rain and possible thunderstorms. The GEFS Ensemble Model Outlook below brings the 60s into Baltimore next Wednesday. The overall snowpack will take a hit during this next week. But rain on top of the large piles blocking storm drains could lead to additional flooding problems.

Strong Coastal Storm- Missing Us

A Gale warning has been posted for coastal areas as strong winds will be the main impact of the next storm. That will set sights on Nova Scotia. The upper level energy trying to catch up to it could bring us flurries on Friday. But otherwise, this is the storm I mentioned a few days ago that should not be a repeat of our Blizzard 2016

Temperature Outlook:

Thaw-Freeze Cycle continues for a few more days. Then gradual warming and melting. The storm arriving next Wednesday will be the concern as heavy rain could be possible. The trailing cold front might produce thunderstorms. The main issue will be rain on the snow will more than double the water aiming form the storm drains. Any that are blocked by snow piles will add to flooding. Then the pattern returns back cool than average.
