Bitter: Cold Today Then Warming For Weekend Storm

Screen Shot2016-01-13 06_09_59Perhaps you got a dusting of snow or even just saw one of the bursts of snow that passed through Tuesday evening. The issue that has followed is the coldest air of the season on the heels of strong winds. The good news is that the winds will ease up, but it will remain frigid all day long.  The bitter part of this for snow lovers is that there will be a storm this weekend. That storm will be in a good coastal location, but warming ahead of it will make it rain. This is why I was hesitant to discuss this when first mentioned last week. We are in an El Nino dominated pattern. Models don’t handle it well, and systems end up with a push north.

My philosophy on this: Don’t believe in storms that models show beyond 5 days. However, it will be the systems that don’t initially look promising that could come together.  That ‘might’ apply this weekend as well. It is not a promise, just a hunch… But first, lets tackle the wind and cold today. Then a look at the weekend slider below.

Wind and Cold

The stronger winds this morning will gust 20 to 30 mph just after the sun rises to mix up the atmosphere. Wind chills will be in the single digits and teens in central Maryland/southern PA.  But some improvement by the end of the day.

Look at the system to follow on Sunday. It appears to show light snow or flurries in Virginia. But if the El Nino push holds, this could spread farther north with some of that light precipitation reaching Maryland.

Temperature Outlook:

After a brief warm up, there will be another drop in temperature. The cold will hold all of next week.
