Very Windy Friday The 13th

FriAMWeatherMapToday is transition day. A mild morning in the 50s will battle the colder air pushing in. Friday the 13th will be good luck for the ski areas, including western Maryland’s Wisp where snow showers and some light accumulation is possible. But as those winds move over and down the mountains, they can warm the air, counteracting the cold push for a few hours. But the wind will fight and win, with the drop in temperature noticeable by tonight. The cold air will dominate this weekend and Sunday could start frosty for some, but better for the Ravens game.

Winds Pushes Tide Out

Screen Shot2015-11-13 06_05_10The gusts today will range from 20 to 40 mph across much of our area. Over 40 mph along the mountain tops to our west.  But the Chesapeake Bay will show off how sensitive it is to the wind. Much of this season has been dominated by southeasterly winds preventing high tides from flowing out, or easterly winds sloshing the water onto the western shore. Today the strong wind will take the water out, making for exceptionally low tide.  One thing you might notice at low tide in Baltimore at 9:30 AM or Annapolis at 7:57 AM  and 8:43 PM. But not limited to those times.

Energy Peak!

The mid to upper level winds show the strongest push this evening as the cold air finally makes it past the mountains into central Maryland, eastern PA, and Delmarva.  This could take a few flurries over the mountains to the western hills/suburbs.  But strong winds and more energy aloft will pass through Saturday, which will build more clouds and might develop some more showers that could have flurries mixed in.

Watch The Flow

The reason for the strong winds will be due to the very strong storm to our north, and pressure gradient with High Pressure building in for Sunday. The winds will stay out of the northwest, but ease for the Ravens game on Sunday.  This timeline slider shows the transition very well.
