Big Changes: Warm Veterans Day To Possible Snow Showers

WeatherMapNov11The departing storm has left the mild air behind. Once the clouds break, the temps should warm into the 60s. A little above normal and sharp contrast to the 1987 snow storm.  Another snow maker in the central US will be the game changer as it tracks to the Great Lakes, then pulls colder air our way for the weekend.  This storm is not for us, but the shift in the jet stream will make for a colder weekend that might include snow showers in the western hills and mountains.

Jet Stream Shifts To Colder Pattern

Our region will stay on the arm side of the system as it brings rain our way Thursday. This should be a morning event, and the cold air will not arrive until Friday. Here is the rain timeline in this radar simulation.

Snow showers?

Before we get too excited, this is a minor Great Lakes event. But there will be upper level energy that will support the showers developing over the ‘Lakes that can carry snow showers over the mountains. Farther east and south, the odds lower to flurries. But there will be something as the colder air spills in.

This upper level map shows the spin or vorticity aloft. This is what marks the shift in the jet stream, and could provide enough lift to allow some showers to survive over the mountains. If so, the timing would be Friday late afternoon into early Saturday morning. NOT a travel concern locally, but could be fun to look for.
