Tropical Storm Erika Watches In Caribbean, Track May Clip Florida

Screen Shot2015-08-25 15_00_06Just as Danny was downgraded and almost forgotten, the new Tropical Storm Erika is picking up where he left off. For the record, Danny looks impressive on satellite and is spreading welcome rain on drougb parched Puerto Rico, but the organization and winds have dropped out of interest for the National Hurricane Center. Erika is slightly larger with a reach 80 miles from the center, and the forward speed is faster at 20 mph.

Erika seems to have less obstructing development over the next five days. The path will cross some of the eastern Caribbean Islands, and ‘watches’ have been posted. The farther outlook shows continued growth to hurricane intensity and possibly Category 2 or 3 with a 50% or greater chance it has some impact on south Florida. This does not guarantee a direct hit, but the range of potential tracks and intensity support part of the storm reaching the Bahamas and US, while residual waves will be felt up and down the east coast.  See the forecast intensity and maps below.
